More PCBs for the cellular phones in Korea.
As you already know, a Korean electronics giant SamSung Electronics has been increasing the production of cellular phones significantly in the last few years. The company already has the third position of the major cellular phone manufacturers in the world. SamSung produced 19.4 million units of cellular phones in the first half of 2002. It was more than a 55% increase from the same period of the previous year. But it is not only SamSung, but also the other manufacturers in Korea. LG Electronics increased the production of cellular phones more than 60% during the same period. New comers in this industry such as Telson Electronics and Maxson Electronics made the production double or more in the same period. Totally, Korean cellular phone manufacturers have increased 10 million units from the first half of 2001 to the first half of 2002.
Certainly, this number made a significant contribution to the production of multi-layer boards and flex circuits in Korea. It could be more than one million square feet of multi-layer circuit boards and half million square feet of flex circuits. It is not an absolute number. It is an increase from 1H/2001 to 1H/2002. Now, we can understand why Korean multi-layer board manufacturers and flex circuit manufacturers have been so busy recently.
Most of the Korean flex manufacturers are not big companies and their capacity of the flex circuits is much smaller than the rigid multi-layer boards. They have been trying to enlarge their capacities, however the flex manufacturer can not cover all of the orders at the present time. The cellular phone companies have to import from overseas vendors.
The Korean cellular phone manufacturers have been increasing the productions in the second half of 2002, therefore, the PWB vendors for the cellular phones should be busy for a while.
